We have exciting news to announce - our Gen 6 Sonnenglas products have won the international design award BIG SEE Product Design Award 2023! Not only that: Sonnenglas was even awarded the highest score.

BIG SEE Product Design Award 2023 - A look behind the scenes

The BIG SEE Product Design Awards ceremony took place again this year as part of the "Month of Design". Organized by the renowned BIG network, this year's BIG SEE Design Week took place in Ljubljana to bring together creative minds from 21 countries in and around Southeast Europe and celebrate the dynamism of this region.

As the Product Design Award is one of the most coveted design prizes, we are very honored that the independent jury of international experts awarded us the highest possible number of points in the "Home" category as a sub-category of "Product Design". The criteria for the assessment were ergonomics, aesthetics, ethics & ecology, emotion and business potential. This is recognition of our efforts to combine sustainable design with functionality and style.

The Generation 6 solar glass - more than just a lantern

Our latest innovation, the Generation 6 SOMO solar glass module, has not only won the hearts and minds of our jury, but also sets a shining example for fair trade and sustainability. With a light duration of up to 100 hours and a luminosity of up to 100 lumens, it illuminates indoor spaces and outdoor locations alike! This pioneering technology now makes it possible to vary the brightness continuously and thus always create the perfect ambience.

But that's not all: the SOMO sun module can now be used independently of the glass and therefore fits in any trouser pocket. And if the sun hides behind thick rain clouds for a while, it can be conveniently charged via the USB-C port. The SOMO is of course compatible with all previous solar glass lanterns and is now available separately as a Classic and Mini in our shop.

Sonnenglas - a shining example of fair trade and sustainability

The solar glass is not only an innovative solar lantern, but also a shining example of social responsibility and sustainability. Each solar glass is handmade in our own fair trade project in Johannesburg, South Africa. This manufactory has provided 65 previously unemployed people with secure jobs and offers them a sustainable perspective.

For those in the townships without regular electricity, Sonnenglas offers an emission-free, reliable, independent and, above all, safe source of light. The solar lantern consists of a glass jar and a state-of-the-art solar panel. We have combined these in a sleek and clever design that has earned us the BIG SEE Design Award. This is proof that responsibility for our environment and stylish design are not mutually exclusive, but go hand in hand in our Sonnenglas. We focus on innovation, design, fair trade and sustainability to make the world a little brighter and fairer.

The Sonnenglas Generation 6 product family is more than just a lantern - it is a symbol of innovation, sustainability and social responsibility.
