Light Carafe

Water by day. Light by night.

The concept

A carafe for the table — and when the sun goes down, it becomes a lamp. The SOMO solar light sits in the lid: it charges through the day and glows through the evening. Two sizes, four shapes, one idea.

The story

Elegant light for your table. The Light Carafe brings the SOMO solar light from the campsite to the dinner table.

The Light Carafe is the Sun Jar's elegant sister: a glass carafe with the modular SOMO solar light living inside. It charges by the window or on the balcony by day and stands on the table by night — warm white, dimmable light at 3000K, bright enough to read by, calm enough to talk by. One charge easily carries an evening: up to 28 hours on the medium setting. And like every Sonnenglas, it comes from our Fair-Trade factory at Victoria Yards, Johannesburg.

Social Impact by Design. Made in Africa.

From Waste to Elegance

The Sonnenglas® Light Carafe is hand-blown from 100% recycled glass collected by people in Eswatini. For many, collecting bottles is their only source of income.

Collecting bottles

Discarded beverage bottles serve as the raw material. For many people, collecting bottles is their only source of income. The Light Carafes are made from 100% recycled glass.

Recycling

The bottles are sorted, washed and shredded. The raw material is then melted down. The furnace runs on used cooking oil, and the electricity comes from the glassworks' own solar system.

Glassblowing in teamwork

Glassblowing combines hard physical labour and delicate craftsmanship. It takes about a year of training to make a Light Carafe. A single one passes through the hands of seven people: blowing, cutting, finishing.

Frequently asked questions

The Light Carafe, a SOMO solar light (generation 6) and a cork. If you already own a generation 6 SOMO, for example from a Sun Jar, write to info@sonnenglas.net and we'll send the Light Carafe on its own.

The solar light sits on the Light Carafe as its lid. Line up the dot on the SOMO with the metal dot on the neck: the Light Carafe lights up, and the day/night sensor switches it on and off with the light. To switch off, turn the SOMO at least 2 cm away from the metal dot. Or use the button on the module itself, then without the automatic.

Yes, on a gentle glass programme at max. 45 °C. The cork and the SOMO solar light of course stay out of the dishwasher.

Yes. Every Light Carafe is made from 100% recycled packaging glass and is food-safe. The raw material is tested in the lab regularly.

No. The SOMO's LEDs are so efficient that they produce no noticeable heat.
