New light for your favourite jar: Upgrade programme
The original solar lantern — handmade in Johannesburg since 2013. It catches sun by day and gives warm light by night. Bright enough to read by, beautiful enough to give away.
- Solar + USB-C — one hour of summer sun stores about one hour of light
- Warm white, dimmable light (3000K, flicker-free)
- Weatherproof to IP65 — garden, balcony, camping
- Recycled glass and stainless steel, made by hand
- Fair Trade — steady jobs in Johannesburg
The light in the lid: SOMO
It sits inside. It comes out. It fits every Sonnenglas.
Solar cells, battery and light in one module: the SOMO charges in the sun by day and glows in your Sun Jar at night. Take it out and use it on its own – as a flashlight, in another Sonnenglas or under the Lightshade.
SOMO has been around since 2022 – and it also fits every older Sonnenglas, right back to the first one from 2013. Your jar stays; only the light gets new.

Sonnenglas Sun Jar
One preserving jar, one solar lid, endless evenings
Discover everything about the Sun JarThe story
The Sun Jar was invented to bring safe light to places without electricity — a replacement for candles and paraffin lamps. Today it glows on Berlin balconies just as it does in townships outside Johannesburg. Every jar is made by hand in our solar factory at Victoria Yards, creating real, fairly paid jobs. In the lid sits the modular SOMO solar light: it charges in the sun or via USB-C, runs up to 28 hours on a charge, and moves with you — into the Light Carafe, onto the Adventure Mount, or into whatever you dream up next. What goes inside the jar is up to you: flowers, shells, memories.
