New light for your favourite jar: Upgrade programme
The little sibling of the original solar lantern — 250 ml, handmade in Johannesburg. It catches sun by day and glows on the table, in the tent or on the windowsill by night. Small enough for any bag, enough light for the whole evening.
- Holds 250 ml — hardly bigger than a mug
- Charges in the sun or via USB-C — up to 18 hours of light
- Warm white and dimmable (3000K, 70 lumens)
- Weatherproof to IP65 — balcony, tent, garden table
- Recycled glass and stainless steel, made by hand in Johannesburg
The light in the lid: SOMO
It sits inside. It comes out. It fits every Sonnenglas.
Solar cells, battery and light in one module: the SOMO charges in the sun by day and glows in your Sun Jar at night. Take it out and use it on its own – as a flashlight, in another Sonnenglas or under the Lightshade.
SOMO has been around since 2022 – and it also fits every older Sonnenglas, right back to the first one from 2013. Your jar stays; only the light gets new.

Sonnenglas Sun Jar
One preserving jar, one solar lid, endless evenings
Discover everything about the Sun JarThe story
The Mini is made by hand in our solar factory at Victoria Yards, Johannesburg — in the same building, by the same fairly paid team as its big sibling. The glass is recycled, and in the lid sits the SOMO Mini: it charges in the sun or via USB-C and gives up to 18 hours of warm white light. At 250 millilitres and just over eleven centimetres tall, the Mini is hardly bigger than a mug. It fits in a backpack, on the narrowest windowsill and next to any tent. What goes inside is up to you — sand from the last beach, a feather, a small memory.

Yes. The light module is IP65-rated — rain on the balcony or dew in the tent won't bother it.
